The last 5 years I've been smoking unfiltered Pall Mall. Should not be hard at all!! <arggh. Really though, my wife doesn't smoke, none of my co-workers smoke, there is no smoking in my house, everyone I know has been after me to stop for the last 2 years. Tom in Atlanta This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it +++ Anonymous writes: To all the smokers, those trying to quit smoking and those who have quit, I started smoking when I was 13 and am now 26.  That's a long time, but I know other's who have been smoking longer.  One day smoking is too long and I am so happy that the Truth commercials are out there and I hope they are making an impact on the youth today.  I would never wish this kind of addiction on anyone. So my story - I smoked a lot in high school and college - 1 to 2 packs a day.  After I graduated and began working in the corporate world, I knew that it was frowned upon by many.  I was a good worker and wanted to make it in the company so I kept the smoking to when I was not at work.  So this helped me to cut down to 1 pack every 2-3 days.  I began working out, but still smoked and drank often.  I knew I didn't want to be a smoker the rest of my life and I knew it was disgusting, it was sometimes to me.  You know when your addiction makes you have one and you really don't enjoy it?  I met a man over a year ago and we will be married in March.  He is amazing and luckily a non-smoker.  I was always considerate and made sure I did not smoke too much around him, but that just wasn't enough for him or me.  I was sick of being a slave to cigarettes.  As my friend said, Doesn't it stink doing something you know may kill you .  How true, I knew I had to quit, to just take the plunge. I tried one day with the gum and that lasted only 24 hrs.  Lots of crying and feeling sorry for myself, so I kept smoking, the desire wasn't strong enough yet to quit.  Six months later I tried the patch just for the heck of it and stopped smoking for a week.  That was a hard week!!!  I became depressed and just didn't think life was fun any more.  It is saying goodbye to your best friend, which sounds stupid doesn't it, but it's true. Unfortunately, I've smoked two packs still in a 3 month period, which I feel is successful in it's own way, but not enough. Last night I finished that second pack and I am determined today to never buy another one.  I say today because one of the sayings that helps me is One day at a time , if you absolutely can't stand it and need one, just hold out one more day, if you must you can have one tomorrow.  Then the next day say the same. Soon your desire will deplete and you won't constantly think about it.  It will still be a conscious battle at times, but I am a strong person and can over come this addiction. In the past three months, I am more confident, more healthy and happy.  My desire to smoke has lessened and I feel that I now control my future and my health. My Motivators:         My husband and family to be.         My health - I work out regularly and I love the extra energy and mental strength.         Praying!         A woman I work with smoked three packs a day for 30 years, she quit cold turkey one New  Year's Day and hasn't smoked since.  She didn't use the patch or gum, that wasn't around when she quit.  If she can do it I can!         Feeling free - not to be a slave. Good luck to us all and I hope we all find the strength we need to quit.  I will pray for all of you and myself, if you don't have the strength let God be strong for you. Thank you for listening to my story, it has helped me just to write it. And both were just a little older than I am now when they started dealing with it. And I am 32. I was the one in school who griped at my friends when they decided to try it, but after having to leave college for lack of money, I started waitressing and smoking.  2 yrs later I was smoking almost 3 packs a day... of course I managed to cut it back to 1 and a half packs after a little while. But no matter how hard I tried, it was too late, I was hooked.. i tried to stop with each child, I have 3.  Never could find the willpower.  I made everyone smoke outside for awhile, thinking if I got cold enough trying to have a smoke I surely would quit.. But of course not... Until my kids got old enough to gang up on me... and made me stop and have to tell them that smoking was bad... what a hypocrite... on August 2nd,, I decided to try something... I threw everything out, took a shower, brushed my teeth, and decided to psyche myself out, kind of... tried to remember what it was like before I started smoking and played it through, when I woke up... Just didn't allow myself to think about it... occupied my brain with other things... of course with out even realizing it, I caught myself smoking a few ink pens...lol  and if I got severely stressed and felt like back sliding I would take a few fake puffs off a cigarette from my sister, play president, just don't inhale...lol  After about a week I was fine and still doing great.... I know it sounds nuts, but you just have to know how to pretend... then take it to the limit and before you know it, there gone... Thanks for letting me tell my story... I wish you all the best of luck... will keep you all in my prayers... +++ This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it writes: Subject: Commitment means there is no backdoor I am happy to share my story with anyone who wants to hear it. It really is just a variation of an old theme.  At 56 I realized that I had smoked for 40 years - that meant that I really couldn't remember anytime when I did not smoke.  My hubbie had smoked even longer.  Both our children were married and the first grandbaby was here when it began to seriously bother me that I smoked.  I should add that I have tried 4 times unsuccessfully to be rid of the nasty habit. A year later grandbaby #2 arrived - now both our children were parents and the rules were changing!!   No smoking in their homes, no smoking in our home when they visited, no smoking around the babes outside, make sure you scrub to the elbow after smoking if you want to hold the baby, etc. etc.  It was a jumping off place to get serious about not smoking any more. After 4 months of serious head work and some serious convincing with my hubby we were both ready to take on the project - he on Zyban and me on the patch (I have epilepsy so no Zyban)  Well a full calendar month has gone by and no one is smoking and no one is dead, no one is yelling at anyone else, civilization as we know it is continuing and I do reach the end of the month with money left in my wallet! No, this is not the easiest thing I have ever done and neither is it the hardest thing.  On a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give it a 7, but it is getting a little easier.  I know that I will never smoke again as long as I live.  To cave in means that I am content to be an addict and I am not content with that.. Accepting that I am an addict and that I will always be an addict has in some ways made this easier.  Who is going to win, the addiction or me?  Well it is going to be me because I insist on having at least this control over my life.  A little stubbornness doesn't hurt sometimes and this is one of those times. Our children are very proud of us for this and are supportive without treating us as if we deserve a medal.  After all is was us who put us in this position and it will be us who gets us out of it. An addiction, like smoking, can be broken, one cigarette at a time, one day at a time, if it is what you really want and if you are willing to put up with  a little discomfort to get free. I am and so is my hubby - a buddy is really helpful - neither of us wants to let the other down so we both hang in, some days for the other guy and some days for ourselves. Good luck to all of you - if you think you can, then you can. I started smoking when I was 17 years old.  My parents found out just before my 18th birthday and since I was about to graduate, and they were both smokers, they said it was up to me if that's what I wanted to do.  My mom wasn't exactly happy about it but my dad didn't care which made it easier for me to smoke. I had tried to quit several times and always 'gave in' to the desire (or what some call instant gratification).  I tried to quit last January and it didn't last very long because I wasn't quitting for myself, I was quitting for other people.  They put a lot of stress on me to quit and I just wasn't ready. On October 25, 2001, I woke up, literally looked at my husband (non-smoker) while we were still in bed and said, I'm really sick of smoking .  He asked me what I wanted him to do and I said, please go to the store and buy me Nicoderm CQ.  He GLADLY did! I wore the patch for 4 weeks and eventually FORGOT to even put it on in the mornings.  Today I haven't smoked for 76 days and I'm so proud of myself for that.  As all of you that have quit KNOW what an accomplishment it is to achieve this! I prayed a lot during this quitting time and I know that God didn't just help me through it, he got me through it!  There's no way I could have quit on my own.  I owe my success to him! I encourage you to pray about it if you are having a really hard time quitting.  It WORKS!!!  Because now, I'm SMOKE FREE!!! Tricia Want to read more stories from successful quitters?
