*IMMINENT SOUTHEAST ASIAN REFUGEE AND ASYLUM LAW CHANGES* Two extremely dangerous amendments have been added by Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) to HR 1561, the State Department authorization bill. It is scheduled to be voted on by the House as **early** as *May 22 or May 23*. It is urgent that you call or fax your representative as soon as possible. (E-mail is better than nothing, but phoning or faxing is better.) The phone number for the U.S. House of Representatives (Congress) is: (202) 224-3121. One amendment would require that all 47,000 Southeast Asian refugees now being held in camps in Hong Kong, Thailand, and the Phillipines be offered resettlement in the United States. These are people who have been exhaustively interviewed by officials from the United Nations, the United States, and numerous other countries and found to be simply economic migrants in search of a better life - NOT political refugees. The practical effect would be to unleash a new outpouring of economic migrants from Southeast Asia - all claiming to be political refugees. A bad move and a bad precedent. Of course, one can sympathize with those effected, but there are literally over a billion people who could potentially improve their lives by relocating to the U.S. It is simply not workable to allow everyone who could improve their lives by coming here to do so. The other amendment creates a giant loophole for millions of new Chinese migrants by changing the definition of political asylum to include all who claim to have resisted a foreign government's population control policies or who fear they will be persecuted in the future for such resistance, if they are returned. This means that virtually everyone from China who is able to get to the U.S. will automatically be granted the right to remain here as political asylees. This would be a bonanza for the criminal smuggling rings that bring illegal aliens here. - and for the sweat shops and others who employ them as virtual slave labor.
